Pelican Invests in Students Financial Futures for Seventh Year

ALEXANDRIA, LOUISIANA – On Tuesday, October 10, 2017, Pelican State Credit Union hosted a kickoff party to celebrate its student-operated branch inside Peabody Magnet High School.

Students from Ms. Sandra Eldridge’s business class operate the branch. All students can visit the branch to make deposits or withdrawals to their savings account every Wednesday that school is in session.

In addition to the student-operated branch, students enrolled in business classes regularly take financial education courses taught by Pelican’s Nationally Certified Credit Counselor Rhoda Hundley. Course topics include handling a checking account, paying for college and establishing good credit.

Peabody Magnet High School has been a great partner for Pelican over the last six years, and the credit union loves investing in its students’ financial futures. Eldridge has been a major proponent for the credit union’s presence in the school in order to equip her students to thrive now and post-high school graduation.

The kickoff party included a ribbon cutting ceremony, refreshments, games and door prizes for the students. Pelican’s mascot, Petey, also made a special appearance.

Although this branch only serves students, all Rapides Parish residents are eligible for membership and can use the branches located at 4520 Lee Street in Alexandria and 3628 Monroe Highway in Pineville.
