DENHAM SPRINGS, LA – Pelican State Credit Union was named "Medium Business of the Year," by the Livingston Parish Chamber of Commerce at their annual Business Awards Banquet and Gala held in Denham Springs last Saturday.

This event recognizes businesses that provide leadership and excellence in their efforts to make Livingston Parish a better place to live and work. The "Business of the Year" award is granted each year to organizations in three categories based on size: small, medium and large.

Pelican received the "Small Business of the Year" award from the chamber in 2007.

"Since opening its doors in Denham Springs more than eight years ago, Pelican has consistently supported the communities and working families of Livingston Parish," said Melanie Wheeler, Pelican Division Operations Manager.

Led by Branch Manager Johnette Mauldin, Pelican actively supports the Chamber of Commerce by attending all membership meetings and fundraising events. Additionally, employees attend several ribbon cuttings throughout the year to welcome new business owners to the community.

In addition to sponsoring local community organizations such as the Antique Merchant's Association, the Pelican team volunteered their time to participate in other community events including the Relay for Life, Denham Springs Athletic Association Golf Tournament, Summer in the Village, Christmas Parade and Journey Stories at City Hall.

In 2011, Pelican granted two $500 scholarship awards to students in Livingston Parish from Holden and Doyle High Schools. Since beginning its scholarship program four years ago, Pelican has granted six $500 scholarship awards to students in this community.

For the eighth year in a row, Pelican hosted a FREE Kids Bike Race for children 12 and under in Livingston Parish. The event promotes healthy and active lifestyles and is open to the public.

Additionally, Pelican's Nationally Certified Credit Counselors host free financial literacy workshops for local residents.

"The Denham Springs Branch staff of 10 strives to be active and hands-on in Livingston Parish," said Wheeler, "Pelican cherishes its relationship with Livingston Parish and looks forward to continued community involvement."
